People often colour their hair because they want to cover gray hairs, or to change their hair colour, because it is a fashionable and desirable thing to do, many may colour their hair to restore the original hair color after it has been discoloured by bleaching. Hair colour today is extremely popular and for many a big life changing experience, a way out of their comfort zone and a leap into something new and endearing.
Whilst hair colouring is exciting, there are some factors that you need to consider first before you take that leap of faith!
There a many diiferent ways to apply hair colour to your hair, the application techniques are ones that are done off the scalp.
Application Techniques
> Highlighting is a technique done to sections of the hair, the colour is usualya blonde
colour, remember for this affect, the hair may need to be bleached first, before colouring is applied to sections of the hair.
> Lowlighting is where sections of the hair is treated with a much darker hair dye color
> Ombre is where the crown of the hair is dark and sections by sections becomes lighter towards the end.
These techniques are composed by either foiling, cap, balayage where the hair dye is applied to the hair into sections using no foil. Tip dyeing which is a similar method to Balayage but this methods focuses on the ends of the hair.
" Remember hair colouring does not have anything to do with the texture of your hair, it has more to do with the porosity of your hair"
Different Types
Permanent Hair Colour
When applying permanent hair colour, the hairs cuticle needs to be lifted, in order for the hair colour to deposit into our hairs cortex. It works from the outside in, so it penetrates each of the hairs cuticles and enters into the cortex where bonding with the hair happens. Permanent hair color contains ammonia and must be mixed with a developer, in order for permanent color change. The level of the developer used is determined by the desired hair colour and how many levels of lifting it will take to achieve that desired dye. The higher the developer volume, the higher the lift on the natural hair's pigment.
Semi-Permanent
Just as the name explains, this type of hair dye is temporary. This hair dye partially penetrates the hair shaft, this hair colour will survive repeated washes after 5 shampoos. This hair dye has no levels of developer, peroxide or ammonia, it is a safer option for those that has damaged or fragile hair.
Remember the colour of the hair after using the hair dye will depend on your hair colour and porosity, so you may experience variations in shades across the whole head. Semi permanent hair colour does not have bleach and therefore will not lighten your hair.
Demi-Permanent
Demi permanent is used by many naturals because it creates a naural look without having to lift any levels of your hair, this hair dye lasts much longer than the semi-permanent. It is gentle to use and ammonia free, it has traces of low levels of peroxide but it also contains an alkaline agent, this is less effective in removing the natural pigment of your hair, than a hair dye that has ammonia in it. This dye will not lighten your hair and it is considered less damaging to your hair than a permanent dye, because there is no lifting of natural hair color, therefore the final colour of the hair is much more natural looking and last upto 28 washes. This is a much safer hair dye to use for damaged hair.
Things that can determine the hair color
>So for the color of the semi and the demi permanent hair color is the blend of the natural hair color and hair dye.
> Previously colored hair can react different to the hair dyes ,so be prepared if the hair colour did not come out as mentioned on the packaging.
> Your hairs porosity determines the final shade of your hair, porous hair absorbs more color which often results to a darker shade
> Most prescriptions provided can alter your hairs chemistry
When considering what dye to use in your hair, it is best to conduct a full research on the different types of dye that is out there in the market place. It is always better to seek professional advise before attempting to dye your hair. Always conduct a test strand first, before commiting to your whole head.
