Healthy Scalp produces shiny soft curls

Developing a really good and healthy scalp, always starts from within, what your diet and healthy eating habits are.  It is important to keep your scalp healthy as this is the ground in which your hair or stems of the hair sprouts out from.  Just like a plant, in order for the plant to grow, you will need to place this in a good fertile soil and ensure that the plant is watered and has the necessary plant food that it needs, in order for it to flourish.

The same principle applies for our hair, if the scalp is not healthy then our hair cannot grow healthy and our scalp becomes itchy and dry.

Damaged Scalp

If you have damaged scalp the tell tell signs of this is itchy, flaky, oily and scaly scalp, if this is the case for many of us, you could develop sores on your scalp and suffer from hair loss.  There a many different things that can affect dry itchy scalp and this can range from your diet, the medication your taking, the hair care products that you are using and hormone imbalance.

Healthy Scalp

You will know if you have a healthy scalp, a healthy scalp has open clean pores with a good flow of blood.

Just like you hair, we all have different hair textures and so we are able to determine what our hair type is in order to use appropriate hair care products.  The same principle applies with our scalp, we have normal, oily and dry scalp types and so by knowing what category our hair falls into, will allow us to maintain a good healthy scalp.

   1. Normal scalp

* Has a natural gloss and shine and is smooth and soft to touch
* Normal scalp is not oily and is much easier to maintain
* With this hair scalp you do not need to shampoo as often
* Normal scalp has no problem with dandruff or excessive oil problems

Tips:

Those of you that falls into this category you should look to shampoo your hair twice a week using a shampoo that has herbal in it and a light conditioner

       2. Oily Scalp

Those of you that are in this category , your scalp is oily and your hair is prone to dandruff and flaking, this happens because the excess oil that our glands in the scalp produces remains around the roots and this causes clogging of the pores and itchy scalps. It is best not to be tempted to scratch the scalp as this will cause soreness and tender scalp.  Our hair is limp, flat and lacks volume even when we apply any products that aids volume in our hair, it won't last throughout the day even when applied.

* Hair is prone to dandruff and flaking
* Hair needs to be shampooed weekly and not recommend daily as you do not want to strip your hair from its natural oil completely.
* Hair begins to look limp, oily very quickly
* Scalp becomes oily quickly

Tips:

Wash your hair weekly using products that are suitable for dry, itchy, flaky scalp, or you can opt to use a shampoo that is designed for dandruff.  Do condition your hair but not for a long period of time, perhaps 60 seconds should suffice.  It is recommend that you avoid using leave-in conditioner.

       3. Dry Scalp

Those of you that falls into this category your hair feels very dry, brittle and scalp very flaky your hair also feels rough, dull and lifeless. Your hair glands has insufficient oil and so you need to add moisture to your hair externally.

* Lifeless , dull, flaky, itchy dry scalp
* You get excessive split ends and you get frizzy hair
* You have loss of elasticity and in turn your hair looks dull
* Dry hair will get dry scalp and this is tiny little flakes that is different from dandruff

Tips:

It is recommended that your pre poo your hair using oil onto dry hair overnight, then shampoo your hair weekly using a shampoo that has natural oils, you need to use a thick creamed based conditioner to leave in your hair for around 15-20 minutes before rinsing.

I do recommend that you conduct a oil treatment weekly to help stimulate the oil glands in your scalp, message the oil to help with the stimulation.

4. Combination of Dry & Oily

Now if your hair falls in this category like mine, you hair is oily at the scalp and dry at the ends, this usually happens to those that has long hair.  It is best to to pre poo your hair before shampooing, it is best to use oil and shampoos that has herbal in them and you can wash your hair every two weeks, pay close attention to your ends and ensure they are well moisturised, I like to use a much heavier oil for my ends and a cream and for my scalp a much lighter oil using less products in my hair.

If you follow these steps, you should be on your way to a healthy scalp and a healthy hair growth, remember healthy eating and drinking plenty of water is much needed for your scalp, like a plant it needs its nutrients , the same applies for your hair!
