This is a common problem that majority of us suffer from, thinning, breakage and bald edges, so we ask why? What is causing this problem? What can I do to prevent this from happening?
What causes this problem?
There a a number of reasons as to why your edges are thinning, I have asked several women in the Black Hair OMG what their views are on this topic, Here are response I got back:" Thin hairline is caused by wearing very tight hairstyles, not allowing your hair to breathe by wearing weaves too often and for too long or the obvious one is killing the scalp with chemical perms."Continuous wearing of braids, pinned in ponytails or even weaves all the time will cause significant damage to the hair follicles. The muscles in each hair gets destroyed due to the constant pulling of the hair strands and in affect causes that hair to lie dormant, your hair gets thin or a bald spot is left
This muscle in the hair is called arrestor pill and it is part of the skin that holds the hair in place.
" Thin hairlines result from tension of styling, hats, improper night care to hair, heat damage, chemical damage. abrasive styling, even hereditary traits and vitamin deficiency."
As you can see and most properly already know these are some of the factors that causes baldness, traction alopecia which is caused by tight hairstyles that constantly pulls and tugs on your hair and of course thin edges.
Damaged hairlines can regrow but this can only happen if you spend the time to treat your scalp and hair better. Start by nourishing your hairline from the outside, and nourishing your hair internally by eating the right foods.
8 Things to help grow your edges
Step 1
Start by using the right shampoo do invest in a gentle shampoo that clears your pores and do not use any harsh chemicals. Look for shampoos that has Chamomile, Aloe Vera, Ginseng, Horsetail, Rosemary, Boitin, Cysteine Proteins, Silica and Vitamin E. Do not buy shampoos that has sodium lauryl sulphate. I have given you some samples of the shampoos you can look to buy I hope this helps!

Step 2
Moisturising your hair properly helps your hair to remain stronger and will cause less breakage to your strands. A good conditioner is very important as part of your hair regime, look out for one's that has ingredients such as amino acids, biotin, green tea and aloe vera.

Step 3
Message your scalp to stimulate growth |
Using hair serums, balms and mask can help to thicken and protect your hairline, message the products onto the damaged area. When buying these types of products look for one's that has light protein treatment and vitamin E which helps to replenish any damaged skin on your scalp. Message these products into your scalp and the affected areas, messaging helps to stimulate blood flow to your scalp, increased blood flow will help the affected areas regrow.
I do recommend castor oil it is natural and helps to increase hair thickness and reduce breakage, it also contains Omega 9 fatty acids that helps to moisturise the hair and scalp, and prevents your hair from becoming dry.
Message the castor oil to your hairline daily!!
Step 4
Speak with your doctor if you have done all of the above and you still feel that nothing is happening, you may be lacking vital vitamins that your body and hair needs and they can best advise you on what to take, or could possible prescribe you with what;s necessary

Stop wearing tight hairstyles like braids, cornrows, weaves, tight buns and tight ponytails all of this can cause stress to your hairline, if you are wearing a bun or a ponytail, wear the band loose in your hair to minimise stress to your follicles and leave your hair to breathe, wear styles that causes less pressure to your hairline and also you hair!
Step 6
Stop brushing your hair too harshly and brush gently, when brushing your hairline trade your hair brush for a toothbrush, better for your hairline
Step 7
Stop using chemicals in your hair, these are things like relaxer and hair dyes, these can cause damage to weak and fragile hair especially Avoid using hair gels that contains alcohol, as this removes moisture from your hair and can cause brittle hair and brittle hair causes breakage.
Step 8
Eat healthy and include nutrients such as omega 3, zinc, protein, Iron and vitamin A & C, these help to build natural oils, improve blood flow, encourages tissue growth and repair in the body and help to regrow your hairline.
If you follow these steps you can get back your hairline , please take care of your hair and be gentle to your hair too, be patient and be consistent in your regime and you will reap the results you sow!

Caster oil is a godsend for thinning and breakage. I grew out demarcation line breakage in 4 months from doing caster oil and protein treatments!
ReplyDeleteI went back to jasons vitamin e shampoo and conditioner started using organix but found out it was not organic looking for the mud wash shampoo .I used once before the Jamaican black soap my scalp felt good after the first use .shopping @whole foods now .
