Most people's goal is to have long hair, especially those who have kinky hair texture.  You can achieve this by doing the method of stretching your hair, this can be done with or without heat, but in effect wearing your hair in a stretched style has great benefits.

If you noticed, a lot of people you may come across all have what in common? They wear their hair in a stretched style.

Have you noticed that when you wash and style your hair, you start to experience some shrinkage? While there is nothing wrong with having shrinkage as it is a great way to measure how healthy your curls are, you may notice some single strand knots or several knots forming on the strands of your hair, which can cause cuticle damage and breakage if the hair is left in this shrinkage style. If length retention is your goal, then this is something you want to avoid. If you love to wear your hair in a shrinkage style and it works for you, sis go ahead its nothing to feel any less proud of doing so, I love shrinkage and I embrace it but I have a goal in mind.

Things to remember is kinky hair loses moisture quickly and it has a stronger keratin bond than straight hair, so when your hair dries after washing, shrinkage starts to happen and you may find your hair becoming really stiff to touch and to style. Stretching your hair helps prevent tangles and knots so you can retain length rather than lose it through breakage.

How to avoid this from occurring?

The simple answer is to wear your hair in a stretched style, there are plenty of heat-free stretching methods that you can adopt, such as braid-outs, twist-outs, Bantu knots, braided style, banding method, threading, wraps and buns, select a style that works best for you and stick to that style.

Want to use heat?

People with very dense thick hair, you may not find that this method works effectively for you and that's ok,  properly using heat in your hair can be a wonderful thing like using a heat protectant, low heat setting and using the tension method to stretch hair using heat.  Keep usage of heat though to a minimal let's say at least once a month.

I hope this helps!
