What are Silicones? Should you avoid them completely?
This topics has mixed reviews as many consider silicones to be good, while others do not touch any products that contain silicones in them. So why are we up in limbo? Do we even know what silicones are? Perhaps it may be that important ingredient that helps us in our natural hair regime. I always like to research things first, before listening and taking on board people's views and opinions after all we have different hair types and textures, so what I use in my hair and works for me, may not necessarily work in your hair.
Silicones
Silicones are listed in the ingredients of shampoos and conditioners, when you are seeking out the ingredients in your hair products, you need to look for any one's with the wording "Cones" or any ingredients that ends with the suffixes " one, "conol, or "xane in them.
Silicones is one of the preferred ingredients in hair care products, they act as a protective barrier on the surface of your hair especially when using heat, it allows easy detangling and aids shine, IT provides smoothness especially in the conditioners you use in your hair. You can almost say that Silicones are like oils, they provide that protective barrier to seal in moisture to the hair and yet it provides shine.
Silicones has their purpose and still naturalist's abandon them completely. Why? Silicones are known to cause build up and is hard to completely get rid of the silicones in your strands, in order to remove the build up you are considered to use sulphate shampoos.
There are two types of silicones though, you have a non water soluble silicone and it is this type that creates build up. The other silicone is called water- soluble which helps to low down build up in your hair and is much easier to wash out of your hair, you do not have to use shampoo to wash out this type of silicone as you would if using the non water soluble.
These silicones are know to cause build up in your hair over a certain period of time!
These are the list of silicones that are water soluble silicones and are considered exceptions to using them in your hair.
There are ways to get rid of silicones, you can make homemade clarifier's which there are many detailed on youtube or search engines, you can look for more gentle cleansers that contains these ingredients in them when washing your hair with shampoo
Silicones are not that bad, they have great plus signs for helping your hair along your journey, and you can get rid of the build up if you conduct the process in the appropriate way, when clarifying your hair why not follow it up with a deep condition to help pump back moisture into your hair.
Remember silicones end with the wording one, conol, cones, xane so when shopping for hair products bring your list along so you can see what you are buying, silicones that has PEG which are modified silicones are acceptable to use.
Guys I can only say that you have a chose on whether to use silicones or not, you know your hair and you know what your hair accepts, do not follow others but do what is best for your hair, get clued up on your ingredients and see what products works well for you, check out the ingredients in that product, and seek to see if you can find other brands that has similar ingredients to the one that works best in your hair.
