How many of us are clued up on the ingredients, listed on our natural hair products?. There are several products in the market, that aids solutions to combat frizzy, dry, dull hair, but which of the products do we really need? What product benefits your hair? What is your hair lacking, that these products or the ingredients listed, will help to resolve your hair problems?

Researching and finding out what ingredients works best in my hair, is always something I do, before I venture out, and commit to buying any products that looks and smells divine.  Researching and learning about ingredients and finding out what products works best, according to what your hair needs, so if you have colored hair, you need to ensure that you are using products that caters for colored hair, if coconut does not agree to your hair, you need to make sure that products you look for, does not have that ingredient listed in it.  It is time consuming at the end of the day, but the hard work will pay off in the end.


So what ingredients help with moisture?



Water listed as the first ingredient on hair moisturizers, makes a good moisturizer, this should always be the first item listed. Emollients are moisturizing treatments that is applied directly to the hair to help reduce water loss.  You do apply your oils first to seal in your moisture (Water) followed by your cream.

Oils that consists of emollients are:


* Shea butter that helps to keep in moisture and has high levels of fatty acids, that provides a layer on top of your strands, to prevent moisture loss.

* Coconut oil provides shine and helps strengthen your hair strands.

* Aloe Vera is great oil that contains mild antibiotic and helps to prevent hair loss, dandruff and promotes shine. Aloe Vera gel has numerous of vitamins, such as A,B1,B2,B3,B5,B6,B12,C,E, choline and folic acid.

* Glycerin is a thick liquid that is colourless and commonly used in soaps and beauty products. Glycerine is a humectant that absorbs water and helps seal in moisture.

* Jojoba oil is a humectant that is non greasy and helps to promote shine.

* Soybean oil is full of good fatty acids, manganese and vitamins, it is high in vitamin E and a non greasy carrier oil that will imporve moisture retention and shine. This oil is great to seal in your ends and a base oil for essential oils, it is great for hot oil treatments, pre poo and adding to conditioners.

* Grapeseed oil contains a high amount of linoleic acid that is a tye of omega-6 fatty acid that helps to combat dyness and provides protection aganist moisture loss, it is said that this oil's consistency is close to jojoba oil.

* Castor oil has ricinoleic acid and omega-6 essentrial fatty acids, which accelerates blood circulation to your scalp, this will increase hair growth.  It helps to nourish your scalp, it helps to strengthen your hair roots.

* Avocado oil helps with hair growth with its long list of vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fats and amino acids.  The monounsaturated fatty acids found in this oil, is much higher that olive oil, if caters to those who has dry, damaged, weak hair due to the monounsatured properties in this oil, when applied it will moisturise and nourish and strengthen your hair strands.

* Sweet almond oil is a great sealant and hair protector, with monounsaturate fatty acids found in this oil, which will moisturise and nourish your hair.  It provides shine and gives you a shiny silky look, it will help dry, damaged hair.  It is rich in vitamin A,B2 B6 &E.

All helps to reduce moisture loss and are oil based sealants. Oil based sealants without water will not moisturize your hair, but will create barriers to keep in moisture.

* Honey
* Agave
* Aloe vera

Humectants are ingredients that helps to retain moisture and is used primarily in foods and cosmetic products.

Ingredients that are humectants are:


* Glycerin
* Propylene glycol
* Honey
* Agave nectar
* Sorbitol
* Sodium pca
* Panthenol
* Hydrolysied silk protein
* Fructose

All of the above are examples of ingredients that are humectants and all retains water differently.

Summary


Finding a great moisturiser purely depends on what products works for your hair type. Knowing your hair type, density and hair texture, will determine whether you need a heavier or lighter hair moisturiser.  I am a great believer in finding products that caters to the needs of your hair, if you have dry hair you need to find products and ingredients that helps to aid that problem, and remember to follow the directions accordingly, you will reap the benefit of the product more when you are following what it says to do, on the product.

A good moisturizer should contain water, humectants, emollients and sealants.
