So what is this Brazilian blowout about? Why do many naturals opt to have this done? What are the benefits of having it done? And is it damaging to our natural hair?

What is Brazilian Blowout?

This hair treatment also called Brazilian Keratin is a temporary method of straightening your hair, and this consist of your hair being sealed by a liquid keratin and a preservative solution into your hair along with a hair iron. This treatment came from Brazil and was made to straighten your hair without burning your scalp but to give you longer straighter lasting results of up to three months.

A hair stylist applies the keratin hair straightening product into your hair and heat of a flat iron is applied, to seal in the product.  This process usually takes 90 minutes can be longer, dependant of your hair length

What are the benefits of using this process?

According to hair stylist, this hair treatment helps to get rid of frizz  where you can embrace light rain and your hair will remain straight, no frizz or change in hair. Your straightened hair will last for three months. This treatment will leave your hair looking smoother and straighter.

This process is performed on various hair types and the cost can vary, dependant on the length of your hair. This hair treatment is recommended to be done consistency in order to obtain a desired look.

After the treatment has taken place, it is best to avoid washing your hair three to four days, as you want the treatment to take its course to work in your hair.  After this time you can wash your hair using a sodium sulfate free shampoo to help maintain the treatment.

Once you have washed your hair, you won't need to blow your hair out, you just allow your hair to dry naturally.

Cons of using this treatment?

If you decided that you did not want to maintain this course of treatment any more, the quality and up keep of your hair will begin to get dry and brittle and damaged.  Your hair would not return to its original wave pattern, meaning that you would have to grow or cut out the areas of treated hair.

The keratin treatment may not cause any damage to your hair as such, but the flat ironing process may have an affect on your hair especially when the hair stylist uses a high heat setting on the iron.

Right now, it all sounds really great but with every good thing, there is always something linked that will cause you harm.

Formaldehyde is a chemical used in this treatment and many other industry products, because this blowout has high levels of concentration, hair salons have been advised to use no more than 0.1 percent of formaldehyde, exposure to higher levels can result to watery eyes, runny nose, upper respiratory tract infections and nose bleeds.  This can lead to cancer as well.

This treatment was banned in several countries, including France, Germany, Ireland and Canada, why? Because of the high concentrations of regulated chemicals found in them.

Not all hair salons that performs this treatment are clued up on how to conduct this process, and many are unaware that this treatment has formaldehyde in it, and if used incorrectly can cause damage to your health if exposed to high levels of this chemical.  The company's bottles of solution should carry warning labels, that all using should adhere to, it warns them of the potential formaldehyde risk and the need to perform the treatment in a well ventilated area.  This treatment has methylene glycol so when heated it releases formaldehyde.  You may find that stylist tends to mix their own, adding more formaldehyde, this is a problematic area where higher levels of this chemical can be more damaging to the stylist and to the customer.

The company has introduces a new product called the Brazilian Blowout Zero, which is 100% free of formaldehyde, but the results of what you get when using the normal one is not that good.

I have linked a treatment process and consultation guide for your all http://www.brazilianblowout.com/literature/bb_treatment_summary_2013.pdf

The cons is:

- High price to pay for treatment
- Formaldehyde chemical is damaging for your health
- If you chose not to continue the course of this process, it can leave you hair dry, brittle and damaged, you may have to cut out the treated areas or grow it out
-You hair will not return to its original curl pattern

As you can see the pros out ways the good, do consider all the risk factors of doing this treatment, at the end of the day your health matters more than having nice straight hair. you get one chance in life, and it is best to stay healthy.  Do your research into the salon that you are visiting, when having a consultation, ask all relevant questions, you need to know if this person is qualified, ask how the process is done, the levels of formaldehyde used in the product, the iron heating levels etc.

I do hope that this has helped you! Have you conducted this process before? How was the experience? Would you recommend this?
